Tool Storage Boxes

Parametric, Interlocking, Assortment Boxes

Design Concept:

Aim
To create a flexible, modular storage system for tools and other items that adapts to varying needs while maintaining organisation and ease of use.

Key Requirements

  • Standardised: All components are universally compatible, ensuring seamless integration.
  • Locking Mechanism: Each component remains securely in place unless deliberately repositioned.
  • Flexible: Designed to accommodate both small and large items of varying shapes effectively.

Inspiration

The design takes inspiration from LEGO building blocks, known for their universal compatibility, standardised design, and secure locking features. Like LEGO, this system allows for easy assembly and disassembly while maintaining structural stability.

Design Details

The storage system is built around modular cuboid boxes featuring interlocking nubs on their bases. These nubs enable the boxes to:

  1. Lock into place on a base grid.
  2. Stack securely on top of other boxes.

Dimensions:

  • Horizontal increments: Standardised to 2 inches.
  • Vertical increments: Standardised to 1 inch.

Customisation Features:
Each box includes internal slots designed for adding removable inserts, allowing users to tailor the system to their specific needs.

Insert Examples:

  • Comb Inserts: For organising pliers vertically.
  • Tray Inserts: Ideal for storing screwdriver bits.
  • Divider Inserts: To create smaller compartments within larger boxes.

Results

The final design achieves a highly versatile, expandable storage solution that combines:

  • Compatibility across all components.
  • Secure and stable organisation.
  • Customisation to suit diverse storage needs.

This innovative system transforms tool storage by providing a scalable, organised, and user-friendly solution.
