Design:
Aim
To enable a single technician to change timing belts more quickly than two technicians can – the technicians requested tools to hold the new belt in place whilst it is adjusted
Requirements
- Specific – the tools must fit the vehicle being serviced
- Reliable – they must firmly clamp the belt to the cogs and be durable
- Convenient – they must be easy to install on the belt and must cause minimal obstruction to the work area
Results
Measurements were taken of the engine and prototypes were rapidly produced; following feedback from the technicians these were modified to better retain the belt. The final tools were printed in a high density TPU plastic to enhance durability and enable sufficient plasticity for them to clip onto the belt.
After the final version of the tools were employed, the timing-belt job duration has been halved. Moreover, only one technician, instead of two, is required. As different engine designs are encountered, similar tools can be produced.
